MEET THE DEANS p.2 FALL CALENDAR p.9 SPORTS DEVELOPMENTS p.l3 The student Voice of Methodist College smallTALK July 7,2005 Fayetteville. North Carolina Volume 45. Issue S Several Students Sit Down to Discuss Why I Chose Methodist College Meeting New Friends By Melanie Gibson One of the reasons I checked out Methodist was because it was a smaller school that was far enough away without being too far. Also, the application was one of few that did not require an essay, which was a major plus for me. After a campus visit, I felt confident that on such a small campus, I would have a hard time getting lost. Little did I know, on the very first night I would walk into the wrong dorm. I was accepted to participate in the First Year Experience Program (FYE) my fi'eshman year. One of the perks of being in FYE is living in one of the newer dorms, Pearce Hall. Unfortunately, Pearce and West halls are nearly identical, especially to an oblivious fi'eshman who is not paying attention. I was so excited about'meeting new fiiends that when I found someone who would willingly hang out with me the first night, I decided to show her my room. In my excitement, I ended up walking into the wrong building completely. 1 did not realize this though until we had clambered up the stairs and noticed that my name was not on the door. I was so embarrassed that I rushed us out of the building. Thankfully, my new fiiend was cool about it and we decided to hang out at her place. Yes, 1 was finally able to find my dorm that night, and my cool new finend even became my best fiiend. Just shows how embarrassing situations can bring people together. College really is not very scary with the right fiiends and knowing that you will laugh about everything later. So enjoy yourself, take advantage of every positive opportunity, walk into the correct dorm and your fi'eshman year should be great. siiiallTAL.K Meet the Deans ? I was also hoping that, as an international student, the small, close-knit atmosphere would help me fit in better. Oh, and there is a good football team too! My first year here, I couldn’t speak English. But all of my fiiends taught me to speak English. They even taught me slang! Several times that year, I was in the room and my roommate was out, so I’d take phone messages for her. But when she came home and looked at them, she couldn’t understand them because I had written them in Japanese without thinking! At Methodist, I think it is important to get involved in activities on campus to meet people and fit in. I joined CRIMP and have gone on almost every trip with them. It is a great club to join if you can’t go home for every break, because they are always doing something fijn. Small College, Big Opportunities By Chris Robinson “Small college, big opportunities,” says the Methodist College slogan. This is why I chose to come here. I know many graduates that have been very successfijl in their careers, and the day-to-day atmosphere around here is more like being with a family than at a school. This combination made MC the right choice for me. I would encourage everyone attending Methodist to ^ get involved, that way you have no time to be homesick. It also helps you keep your sanity when the only things you can think of are your tests and papers coming up in the next month. I chose to become an RA to stay involved on campus. As an RA, my advice to you would be to stick it out. Although sometimes the rules seem hard to follow, do what you have to. It’s all worth it in the long run. I see a lot of interesting things in the residence halls. One night, a resident decided to cook ramen noodles - without using water. I looked out my door to see him running down the hall with a smoking plastic cup in his hands. Fortunately, nothing serious happened, and he just said that he didn’t know he needed water. Feel free to ask your RA for cooking tips before you begin! Looking For a Fresh Start By Remille Shipman I transferred here a year ago because I felt I needed a fresh start in my life. I knew of>lethodist’s reputation as a strong liberal arts school with a small-school feel because I had lived in the area for a couple of years. I got what I expected here and more. I’ve had many positive moments at MC that will stick with me for the rest of my life. I’ve had a blast as one of the sports editors for this very publication (and if you are interested in writing sports for us come find me, because we always need writers) and as a contributing member of the Residence Hall Association. I’ve also had fun hanging out with a diverse group of people from several walks of life. Another reason I am glad I came here is because of the small college feel. At one time, I had dreams of a attending large, big-name school, like UNC (I’m a Duke fan, people -1 just wanted to attend their journalism school) and ECU, but as I did research, I realized that if I had chosen a large school, I would have been competing with thousands of other kids with the same goal, and I would have struggled mightily or flunked out. At Methodist, the small class sizes, professor approachability and everybody-knows-eveiybody atmosphere has helped me develop a lot. I could tell you several stories about the good times I’ve had here, but it would take quite a while. I just want to advise you to get involved in campus activities, make the right decisions, and try your hardest to make this time the best four (or more) years of your life. Your time here is what you make of it, and you will be better off if you make it for the better ... I know from experience. I’m really excited about this year, and I’m confident that this year will be one of the best years that MC has ever seen!
